Proponents in the Living Experiential Recovery (LER) Approach

The People

The Next Step is a team of individuals who are passionate, together, about recovery from addiction. At some point, and in some way, our lives have been significantly affected by the disease. Therefore each of us has chosen to help improve the lives of others suffering from dependence upon drugs, alcohol and process addictions. We help to show that there is an achievable, manageable and even wonderful solution in recovery, and we find the right channels for your personal healing process.

Our clinical specialists, counsellors and support staff have worked in some of the top rehab facilities in the world. They have seen first-hand why some methods succeed where others fail. The team has been chosen for their own personal experience, insight, compassion and inspiration. But their priority is to share and deliver our motivational philosophy: You haven’t come this far to only come this far.

Living Experiential Recovery (LER) is about finding your true purpose and meaning. Our team, like our vision for recovery, requires balance and harmony, and we are unified by our own core values of Passion, Compassion, Integrity, Courage, Honesty and Respect.  It is these values that are at the heart of what we do, and the combined and shared experience shapes The Next Step’s ‘spirit of recovery’.

But we are more than just a rehab…so not all of our team are clinicians and psychiatrists. We believe that a true understanding of addiction can be found in many walks of life. The Next Step harnesses inspiration from a wide variety of life skills, to acknowledge the diversity of our population of recovering addicts, and to increase the chance of stories resonating with differing individuals.

Our counsellors customize their own approach and introduce you to folk they believe will help craft your personal recovery pathway. These may be life coaches, trauma specialists, 12 step mentors, meditation leaders, personal fitness trainers, martial arts specialists, artists, creative writers, yogi, musicians, photographers, dancers…We encourage you to walk with these people and take positive actions for growth alongside them. We believe these connections help us heal.

So who are we? Well, we don’t ‘do’ labels or titles at The Next Step, and we’re more than just a rehab.  The simple, honest answer is that our team work together to facilitate your recovery healing.

  • For most treatment centers the “missing link” is what happens after primary care. At The Next Step I have seen first hand not just what happens, but the ongoing results of what they provide.

  • TNS has given me the opportunity to understand why I relapse and to plan for purpose & meaning in life. Without that purpose, I will be forever relapsing.

  • Whatever challenges life throws at me, I will be able to face them head on because I know that I have the care and support from the guys at The Next Step.

The Place

Why take your next step in Northern Thailand to continue your recovery journey?

Adjacent to Royal Park Rajupruek and Chiang Mai Night Safari, The Next Step Village benefits hugely from its ideal location, just a 20 minute drive to the city, yet in a quiet ‘out-of-town’ location.

The most important criteria for a recovery setting is that it puts space between your head and your old addictive environment. You may associate specific past places, people and things with your using, sparking euphoric recall or feelings of turmoil. By choosing to embark upon this important recovery phase away from those unhealthy connections, you are effectively reducing the risks of relapse while implementing healthy, recovery-based changes.

Chiang Mai – which literally means ‘New City’ – is at the heart of the 700 year old Lanna Kingdom. It brings the old and the new into one contemporary place, while embracing the ethos of change. It is a relaxing and spiritual centre – the complete opposite to the hustle and bustle of the nation’s capital, Bangkok. And excitingly, it’s becoming renowned world-wide for its flourishing recovery fellowships of Alcoholics and Narcotics Anonymous.

The Lanna Kingdom is also known for its mindful approach to life, which we adopt at The Next Step through meditation and mindfulness techniques, and Thai culture provides a wealth of sensory stimulation for the purposes of experiential recovery. It is also a relatively safe place to visit in comparison with many other Asian cities.

A further crucial foundation for experiential recovery is a varied programme which offers part structure and part spontaneity. For this we need a wide range of activities close to hand.

The Next Step Village is ideally located in the foothills, yet within easy reach of the city centre for its cultural, artistic and entertainment scene. And whilst the Thai’s respectful nature keeps the city authentic and sympathetic to its heritage, the creative cliques pop up all over the city with their innovative structures and eye-catching designs.

In short, we feel privileged to have started Thailand’s premier sober living environment in curious and credible Chiang Mai.
